Lauterbach Extends Debug Support for Even More Arduino Devices Free of Charge

Lauterbach, the World’s leading debug tools provider for embedded systems, extends the range of Arduino supported boards and devices. Following the successful integration with the Arduino Pro Portenta H7, Nano 33 BLE, Nano 33 BLE Sense and Nicla Vision, TRACE32® now adds support for the Arduino GIGA R1 WiFi and Arduino Opta.

Arduino is the global leader of open-source hardware and, since 2005, has become almost ubiquitous in microcontroller projects. From now on TRACE32®, with its industry leading debug features, can also be used, free of charge, with GIGA R1 WiFi, designed for ambitious makers who want to step up their game, and Opta, a secure, easy-to-use micro PLC with Industrial IoT capabilities.

Both devices implement a dual core STM32H747 microcontroller including an Arm® Cortex®-M7 running at 480 MHz and an Arm® Cortex®-M4 running at 240 MHz. The two cores communicate via a remote procedure call mechanism that allows calling functions on the other processor seamlessly.

Each Arduino device has a unique serial number that can be used to download a copy of the TRACE32® debugger – free for GIGA R1 Wifi and for a small license fee in the case of the professional Arduino Opta – licensed for use via a serial GDB port. For users who require extended debug and trace functions, the hardware-based TRACE32® µTrace® tool from Lauterbach can be purchased. This requires soldering an SWD header to the board or adding the Portenta Breakout Board and Portenta Vision Shield, both of which are equipped with a MIPI-20T connector for debug and trace. Lauterbach has long supported other Arduino devices such as the Portenta H7, NANO 33 BLE & BLE Sense and Nicla Vision free of charge.

“This is a meeting of minds of two of the biggest forces in embedded computing and I am waiting with anticipation to see where the vibrant Arduino community takes this,” says Norbert Weiss, Managing Director at Lauterbach GmbH. “We are honored to be working with Arduino on this exciting project which involves the educational world and the wide community of makers and look forward to welcoming the next generation of embedded engineers to the Lauterbach community.”

“At Arduino, our mission is to empower developers at all levels with accessible, professional-grade tools for innovation. Lauterbach’s extended support for Arduino devices with TRACE32® is a great step in this direction, bringing advanced debugging capabilities to our community,” comments Fabio Violante, CEO of Arduino. “This collaboration enhances the development experience for makers, students, and industrial professionals alike, enabling them to build and optimize embedded solutions with greater efficiency and confidence.”

Arduino GIGA R1 Wifi and Opta are already available through the official Arduino sales channels.
